12 May 2021

 Had a quick walk around the Doghouse range at lunch time to see some of the areas specialities which are now starting to flower.  Coincidentally, all of today's plants seem to be named after animal parts.

Smooth Cat's Ear is quite unusual, particularly in Oxfordshire and is like a taller, but smaller-flowered Dandelion.  There quite a lot of these around the car park.

If you look very closely anywhere on the range you are likely to find a tiny vetch called Bird's Foot.  A few are now in flower including this one, with a golf tee behind for scale.

Stag's Horn Plantain is more usually found by the sea, but is found by the car park on the short turf.  It is so named because of the shape of its leaves.

Another of the rare plants is Little Mouse-ear.  This one is growing in a patch of Subterranean Clover - it is the tiny white flower that the tee is pointing to.

Very similar, but slightly larger, with longer leaves and more styles is Common Mouse-ear.

15 April 2021

Spent some time with the Ashmolean Natural History Society of Oxford this morning - looking at early season plants on the Doghouse practice range.   This was a great opportunity to be shown some of the rare plants on this Site of Special Scientific Interest by some experts on the flora.  I learnt a lot about the plants there.  Key lessons included:

- A lot of the plants are very small and difficult to see, let alone identify;

- Many of them are more usually found on the coast and enjoy the sandy soil on the range;

- There are lots of rare Trefolium (clovers) and Cerastium (Mouse-ears);

It was fascinating to be shown some of the specialities from the range - I would definitely not have been able to spot or identify them myself.  I will keep going up as hopefully more of them start to flower and give me a bit more of a chance.  Here are a few that I photographed today.
